The Casa de los Amigos is a socially engaged, multifaceted organization dedicated to a platform of social justice through the promotion of understanding between cultures and a recognition of human dignity. Rooted in their Quaker values, they host and provide assistance to refugees from specific backgrounds, offer lodging to visitors from around the world and maintain a support network designed to create a more inclusive approach to social justice.
Casa de los Amigos supports social cooperatives throughout Mexico that promote alternative economic principles. In the lobby of their beautiful building designed by Luis Barragán, they display products produced by these cooperatives which can be obtained by donation or exchange with other goods.
The Casa requested that our design support team develop a better way to display the products of the cooperatives. After several visits, discussions and a spatial analysis of the room with the existing display elements, the design team proposed a new spatial layout, a rearrangement of the products and a new emphasis on presenting the way each cooperative operates and their social approach. A new shelf prototype was developed, which is able to display the products and description of each the cooperatives simultaneously. The shelf was designed to strongly reference preexisting furniture in the house.
